Genesis: an origin, creation, or beginning.
Amalgam: a mixture or combination.
The Genesis Amalgam was an experiment in artistic collaboration conducted in February 2016 by tattooers Guy Aitchison and Nick Baxter, each known for their colorful compositions featuring surreal environments and convincing textures. This documentary tells the story of how these two artists combined their specialties into one multifaceted project.
After selecting client Jeremy Freeman, who contributed the unique tattoo idea that would form the basis for the project, they all convened in Guy’s secluded creative compound Hyperspace Studios along with videographer Rusty Dornhecker for 2 days of intensive creation.
Guy and Nick’s efforts centered around an exploration of Jeremy’s seed of an idea “that life on Earth was delivered by some cosmic being or divine creature.” Beginning with discussion, notes, and reference hunting, and eventually proceeding through multiple developmental stages including sketches and a full color painting with further digital editing, the artists used every medium and technique at their disposal to arrive at the final design.
On the second day Nick and Guy took needles to skin for a marathon tattoo session topping 7 hours, where they worked simultaneously for nearly the entire duration. Their efforts produced a colorful amalgam of organic styles stretching from hip to knee on the enduring Jeremy.
Next the scene moved to Rusty’s video editing studio in Columbus, Ohio, where he and Nick worked for several more days, with long distance input from Guy, to produce a 10 minute artistic audio visual experience of the entire project.
Intended to educate, entertain and inspire, this documentary showcases the possibilities of collaborative tattooing, when two artists work with a trusting client to reach the heights of beautiful artistry while probing the depths of conceptual and symbolic elaboration.
The documentary itself mirrors the collaborative nature of the tattoo, being the result of further collaboration between the creative minds of Guy, Nick and Rusty.
Stay tuned for upcoming news on the Hell City Independent Film Festival that will be featuring a variety of independent and artistic films from several directors that will be showing daily in the Hell City Sinema. Stay tuned for more information!
Thank you for your interest in showcasing work at Hell City 2018 in Columbus, Ohio. This year’s Tattoo Festival will take over the Hyatt Grand Ballroom April 20 – 22nd.
Our dedicated film screening room, affectionately dubbed the “Hell City Sinema” currently showcases Tattoo documentaries, and other non-narrative films. We believe this space and our audience deserves more! And so, we are looking to expand our Sinema’s offerings beginning this year.
Our goal is to present an expanded selection of films to prep our audience for the Hell City Sinema Festival, which will be officially launched in 2019.
Films made by our tattooed brethren, about how they live, love and learn. we would showcase to the world what it is like to be tattooed in the world. Films like Hell City The Documentary would co-exist along side Mike Pecci’s Chef’s Night Off at the Hell City Tattoo Film Festival.
All films submitted to Hell City Tattoo Festival must relate to the over all theme of “Tattoos” as they are seen, experienced, or created, as a direct narrative of the film. When successfully accepted into the festival, the film-makers will be invited to attend and mentioned in Hell City press and media. Attendance is not compulsory. Travel and accommodation are the responsibility of the attending film-makers and not the venue or festival organisers.
If accepted into the festival, you are thereby accepting that your Film will be screened to an audience of attending public and local, national and potentially international press; this may include being open to critique by the press, you therefore accept that the festival organisers, the host venue or related company cannot be held responsible for the opinions of attending press and media. Accepted Film-makers will be asked to submit their final screeners as a full quality digital file ready for conversion into DCPs for Digital Projection.
As you can see, we are in the early stages of this project, but believe it has incredible opportunity and reach, even in this, our pre-launch year. We would be honoured to begin this new journey with the input and participation of a talent like yourself, and sincerely hope we may include some of your titles in the Hell City Sinema this year.
